A small, low-cost nRF52840 USB dongle with external antenna, pre-flashed with nRF Sniffer for BLE firmware from Nordic. It connects over USB and captures Bluetooth Low Energy traffic on the 2.4 GHz band for authorised IoT security research. The nRF52840 is the higher-spec successor to our nRF52833 dongle, adding 1 MB flash, 256 KB RAM, native USB, and 802.15.4 radio support (Thread / Zigbee) alongside BLE and ANT. User-configurable LEDs and a button are exposed for custom firmware.SpecificationsProcessor64 MHz Arm Cortex-M4 32-bit with FPUMemory1 MB Flash 256 KB RAMWirelessBluetooth 5 LE, 802.15.4 (Thread / Zigbee), ANT / ANT AntennaExternal (onboard)ConnectivityUSB 2.0 (native)Reference designEquivalent to Nordic PCA10059, with fewer broken-out pinsHardwareButton (SW1): P1.06LED1: P0.06RGB LED (LED2): Red P0.08, Green P1.09, Blue P0.12SWD header (from the square pad): GND, VCC, SWDIO, SWDCLKNordic nRF52840 chipsetFirmware and softwareShips with nRF Sniffer for BLE firmware from Nordic.Includes the Adafruit nRF52 Bootloader (CDC / DFU / UF2), so updates drag-and-drop as .uf2 files with no external programmer. SWD is also broken out for a hardware debugger.Works with Wireshark (Nordic nRF Sniffer plugin), Sniffle, and other BLE analysis tools.Default firmware is sniff-only. Custom Nordic SDK firmware enables active BLE transmission.FAQHow is this different from the nRF52833 dongle it replaces? More flash and RAM (1 MB / 256 KB vs 512 KB / 128 KB), native USB, and 802.15.4 support, so it runs Thread / Zigbee and heavier custom firmware as well as BLE sniffing. How does it compare to the CatSniffer? This dongle focuses on BLE rather than multi-protocol IoT coverage. Can I reflash it? Yes. The UF2 bootloader allows drag-and-drop updates, and the SWD header is exposed for a debugger.
